Project 1: Researching the Elements and Principles of Design

Your first project is to research the elements and principles of design. These concepts are essential to understanding how art is created and interpreted.

These were concepts that were discussed in the previous course Design through Discovery.

Your homework from the first class is to read and research your assigned section. Find out as much information as you can. In the next class you will be responsible for educating your group about your topic.

If you are researching an element of design use Part B of the handout; if you are researching a principle of design use Part B of the handout.

Remember that there will be a quiz at the end of the second class. Also, you should hand in your research materials and any handouts you used in class. This project is worth 25% of your mark for this section of the course.

Welcome to Formative Techniques in the Material Arts (조형원리)

This introductory course will build on some of the concepts discussed in the seminar course Design Through Discovery. Starting with a review of the Principles and Elements of Design, this course will expose students to many of the formative techniques in the crafts, and the artists who use them. Through group work and seminars, students will examine four major areas of forming, clay, wood, metal, and fabric. Through discussion and presentation students will become familiar with the scope of expression available through these materials.

This is an English based lecture about craft arts. Lectures, discussion and student presentations will be the main components of this course.

Course Objective

Students will gain an understanding of how their own art making experience is informed and influenced by these elements and principles. Students will also learn how contemporary craft arts can be understood in relation to the development of the contemporary art world and changing conceptions of what the experience of Art should be.
